New HVAC System Requirements and A2L Refrigerants
New Systems:
All new residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2025, must use A2L refrigerants. ( R-32 and R454B )
Existing Systems:
While current R-410A systems are not immediately required to be replaced, the availability of R-410A will decrease, leading to higher repair costs and potential difficulties finding compatible replacement parts.
Retrofitting:
Retrofitting an existing system to use new refrigerants is often not feasible due to compatibility issues and the costs involved.
A2L Refrigerants:
These new refrigerants are mildly flammable, requiring updated safety protocols and standards for installation and maintenance.
Price Increases:
The transition to new refrigerants has lead to increased prices for new systems, potentially impacting homeowners who need to replace their HVAC units. This is due to a RFID sensor that is required in all units with more than 3.9 lbs of A2L refrigerant.
